What is biodynamic craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral therapy is many people’s “surprise” favorite form of bodywork. It is a light-touch technique that works with all the tissues and bones of the body, the cerebrospinal fluid, and our fundamental ordering principle, which in craniosacral therapy is known as the Breath of Life. It is both a physiologically and an energetically based system. Over time, its effects can be vast and literally life-changing. At its core, cranial work brings us back to ourselves as we were originally intended to be—to our original intention before the slings and arrows of experience lodged themselves in our bodies.

How it works

The craniosacral therapy that William Sutherland, D.O., “discovered” over one hundred years ago has, over the course of time, moved from a healing modality that was mainly physiologically based to one that, while paying great attention to our body physiology, is grounded in the intelligence of the Breath of Life. The Breath of Life (a.k.a. universal intelligence) promotes the flow of natural healing. Physical and emotional stress can block that natural flow. Cranial work helps it to move again.

Physiology

Healing in biodynamic craniosacral therapy takes place at a number of levels. The level most familiar to us is the physiological. At this level, the practitioner carefully listens to and acknowledges the body’s physiological messages—from the pull of a misplaced vertebra or a strained muscle to the ebbs and flows of cerebrospinal fluid—and helps the tissue adjust to a more optimal level of functioning. I have had many clients come in with neck or back pain that only partially responds to massage. They usually find that by the end of a cranial session their pain has either vanished completely and does not recur or is greatly alleviated.

Acknowledgment

Another level at which craniosacral therapy works is the level of acknowledgment. The process of being heard, acknowledged, and appreciated is very powerful, and the physical body, like the emotional body, responds to it. Often, all that is needed to remove a block is careful, compassionate attention and acknowledgment. Blocks are much like two-year-old children who, once acknowledged, cease their tantrums and transform. This acknowledgment may take place non-verbally, or I may ask you what you are feeling in your body. Your own increasing awareness of what is taking place in your body helps it to begin to heal itself.

The Dynamic Stillness

The deepest level of healing is that of dynamic stillness. In stillness, the inherent potency of the Breath of Life permeates you, and healing takes place. Pains cease or diminish, fear subsides, and the body reorders. No agenda is necessary, for the Breath of Life knows where to go. As the Breath of Life flows through you, you will feel an incredible sense of well-being and peace.

Working with emotional issues

Biodynamic craniosacral therapy is a wonderful and gentle way to work with emotional trauma, anxiety, stress, and depression. Traumatic states are often overwhelming. In biodynamic craniosacral work, trauma is processed at a pace the body can handle, which helps you move gradually toward deeper levels of harmony and attunement. Furthermore, through cranial work, you will naturally become more and more resourced, grounded, and integrated, further facilitating the processing of trauma and/or the achievement of calmer and more joyful states of being.  Click here to see a more extensive list of conditions that can be addressed by biodynamic craniosacral therapy.
